Japanese Sumo Robot – Reboot 2024

I don’t think I ever talk about the actual robot that I made for Japan. I showed CAD print screen back then but never actual pictures of the robot.

Well here are some pictures. I am planning to participate in the 2024 robogames and I am working to improve my 2015 design to hopefully be more competitive then back in 2015 in Japan.

Mine is the black one, the red one is my friends Charles and PM

I already took it apart to improve it, I placed all the part to take this picture 😛

Here is the chassis, billet machine in China for 300$!

Here is the list of items I need to change for this competition. The most important one is having a actual metal arena and testing the robot.

  • get a actual metal 60in arena for testing
  • new wheels material
  • improve the code and fine tune the search algorithm
  • Going from 8S to 10S lipo
  • create new batteries holder
  • create new top cover to hide all electronics and provide easy access to batteries

One of the major change are the wheels. Back in 2015 I did custom urethane wheels. The main problem is that those wheel did came loose in Japan. I am now using Jsumo rubber wheel.

Below are the original wheels that came off in Japan during the competition!

After I came back from Japan, I tried a other urethane (the beige color). Since it’s been more than 9 years, this old urethane sort of dried on the edge of the tire. Since I do not want to risk any detegration during a fight, I decided to use off the shelf wheels that use vulcanized rubber. Actually they are off the shelves but machined shorter. I forgot that I got them machined shorted this affects my next move. Since I move to a new place, I will need to find a machine shop to modify the wheels, this takes time and money. Since I am getting these machined, why don’t I get bearings place in them? I can go in a loop of features and improvement like this forever and the projects does not move along. Will use these as is and get it working first before improving those wheeels.

Here is the mold I designed

Here are pictures of the robot in 2015
